2023-2024 Tryout Format:

Roots 11U, 12U, and 18U will have a one-day tryout. Roots 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, and 17U will have a two-day tryout. On day 1, all athletes will attend one session that will be assigned. All athletes should expect to attend both days of tryouts. Dividing athletes into groups allows athletes to showcase more of their skills and gives us the ability to give each athlete a thorough evaluation. Available day 1 and 2 times will be posted shortly.

Tryouts FAQ

Tryout format consists of testing (approach touch, block touch, shuttle, etc.), position-specific skill testing, overall skill testing, and team competition evaluation. All players are evaluated on all skills. All teams will practice out of the Treehouse Gym.

Players will receive an email notification of their team placement following the last day of tryouts. Invitations will be issued at the end of the second day of tryouts (first day of tryouts for 11U-12U and 18U). Teams will have a Zoom meeting to meet their coaches and other teammates the day following the last day of tryouts. Players and their families will have 24 hours after the Zoom meeting to sign-up for the club season.

We are hosting Summer camps and clinics May-July for  all athletes to train for our club tryouts. Click HERE for a list of all available summer programs. 

The rule of thumb is how old will your athlete be between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

That is the age group in which she should be trying out. Roots Volleyball also recommends players play with their grade for recruiting purposes, if they are eligible to play for two age groups (i.e. It is recommended a 13U player in 8th grade plays 14U with her grade). Please reference USAV’s age chart:

2023-2024 Season Age Definitions 

18 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2005 OR Players who were born on or after July 1, 2004 and a high school student in the twelfth (12th) grade or below during some part of the current academic year

17 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2006 or Players who were born on or after July 1, 2005 (18 years or younger) who shall neither have completed nor are in a grade higher than the eleventh grade (11th) during the current academic year will be allowed to participate at the USA Junior National Championships on 17 and under teams. 

16 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2007

15 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2008

14 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2009

13 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2010

12 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2011

11 and Under Division: Players who were born on or after July 1, 2012

During the tryout selection process, coaches evaluate all players and place them on teams appropriate for their level of ability. We work hard to place players in a position to increase their overall volleyball skills and have a successful season contributing to their team.

Initial payment ($500 for 11U and $750 for 12U-18U National, Travel, and Elite) is required within 24 hours of email invitations/team Zoom meetings. The initial payment is non-refundable for any reason and secures your spot with Roots Volleyball. Remaining balance to be charged in 6 equal payments beginning September 15, 2023.

Roots Volleyball is committed to be a home for all players who wish to play (and make a team) regardless of financial status. If the cost of club volleyball is a prohibiting factor for participation, we have a work program combined with our financial aid application.  Please email Heather Anderson at heather@rootsvb.org to request a copy of our financial aid form.

A Basic Recruiting Package (15U-18U) includes advice, checklists, reminders, and access to the national database of every college needs list to guide athletes through the recruiting process.  THIS PACKAGE IS INCLUDED IN SEASON FEES FOR ALL 15U-18U TEAMS.

Optional Pro Recruiting Package - $300

  • This upgraded package includes one-on-one meetings with our recruiting advisors, 3 highlight films made by our Recruiting Coordinators (Lauren Hansen (national/Zoom), Lindsay Thompson (local/onsite), and April Fricke (local/onsite), and conversation prep for talking with college coaches on the phone, and feedback on email construction.
  • Monthly one-on-one check-ins with local club Recruiting Coordinators (Lindsay Thompson and April Fricke).
  • Personalized recruitment plan designed by Recruiting Coordinators, which provides personalized skills evaluation, recommendation of target schools/program features, and step-by-step recruiting guide specific to target programs.
  • Local club Recruiting Coordinator monitors player/college coach interactions and advises players on outreach.
  • Video package (skills + full set of game footage) with access to updated video with new footage throughout season(s).
  • Unlimited downloads and highlight film capabilities on VidSwap or HUDL (video-editing platform contract not finalized at time of this posting)

Practices begin in November.  Club volleyball season for Travel, and Elite teams runs through the end of April or first few weeks in May (depending on age group and team level).

National teams will follow the same schedule but then take a two-week break in May (following Lone Star Regionals) and will then attend USAV or AAU Girls’ Junior Nationals.  They will continue their season through the end of June or first week of July (depending on age group).

There are no mandatory practices during Christmas break, Spring Break, or the post-season break.

  • 18U National teams include 3 2-day in-state, 1 out-of-state National Qualifier, AVC Dallas Qualifier, Lone Star Classic Qualifier, Lone Star Regionals, USAV/AAU Nationals (8 total)
  • 15U-17U National teams include 4 2-day in-state, 4 out-of-state National Qualifier or Recruiting Showcase, Lone Star Classic Qualifier, Lone Star Regionals, USAV/AAU Nationals (11 total)
  • 14U National teams include 5 2-day in-state, 3 out-of-state National Qualifier or Recruiting Showcase, Lone Star Classic Qualifier, Lone Star Regionals, USAV/AAU Nationals (11 total)
  • 13U National teams include 6 2-day in-state, 2 out-of-state National Qualifier or Recruiting Showcase, Lone Star Classic Qualifier, Lone Star Regionals, USAV/AAU Nationals (11 total)

Practices will be held at the Treehouse Gym for north teams and practice times will range from 5:00pm-10:00pm Monday through Friday and 9:30am-9:30pm on Sundays.  Players will have additional opportunities for position clinic training, jump training, and SAQ training.

One-day, Austin-area tournaments are typically from 8:00am-3:00pm or 3:00pm-9:00pm. Two-day, Austin-area tournaments will follow the same morning or evening schedule for pool play and bracket play the second day. Out-of-state tournaments and Lone Star Classic (Dallas, Texas) are three-day tournaments which will include a Friday or Monday in addition to Saturday and Sunday.  Your daughter may need to miss school for these tournaments.  

Any National teams that do not qualify for USAV Girls Junior Nationals will play in the Patriot division at USAV or at AAU Girls Junior Nationals. Any Regional teams qualifying and attending USAV or AAU Girls Junior Nationals will incur an additional postseason fee to participate.

You will be notified of your season schedule as soon as Roots directors receive information on tournament dates from the Region and from National qualifiers.
