Director Bio

This season (2024-2025) Marie Bruce is rejoining the Roots Volleyball staff to serve as our Coaching Coordinator. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that we believe will greatly benefit our program and enhance the support we provide to our players, teams, coaches, and families.

Marie Bruce was born and raised in Austin, Texas and was a 2004 graduate of John B. Connally High School. She received 1st Team All-District honors as a sophomore, District MVP honors as a junior and senior, and was a member of the All-Centex team. Marie won the Junior Olympic Gold in 16U Beach Volleyball in 2002. Marie continued her volleyball career at Southwestern University, where she received numerous All-Tournament and All-Conference awards during her time on the court. Her senior year she earned All-American recognition. Marie holds records at both Connally High School and Southwestern University.

From 2008-2010 she was an Event Director, running various volleyball tournaments and a club volleyball coach in the Austin-area. She led her 2010 15U team to secure a bid to USAV Girls’ Junior Nationals and had a strong showing at the national tournament. Marie previously coached the top 11s team (6 seasons) for Roots Volleyball. She also provides private training and leads setting clinics at the Treehouse Gym.

Marie began her high school teaching and coaching career at Cedar Ridge High School (2010-2012) where she was an assistant under Kim Fuller and shortly after received the opportunity to be the head coach at Austin High School (2012-2016), where she earned Coach of the Year honors her first season. Marie spent the 2016 season opening Glenn High School and building their volleyball program. She took a break from high school coaching to focus on her family and to teach math at Georgetown High School (2017-2021) for a few years.

Marie is currently the head varsity coach at Liberty Hill High School (2022-current). She led her 2022-2023 team to the semi-final match of the 5A Texas State Championship. The following season she advanced her 2023-2024 team to the championship match of the 5A Texas State Championship and earned a silver medal. She has earned herself numerous accolades including Austin American Statesman Volleyball Coach of the Year (2022 and 2023), TGCA All-Star Game Coach (2024), and Austin Sports Journal Coach of the Year (2023). This season Marie also moved into the Girls’ Athletic Director position at Liberty Hill High School. Her varsity team is projected to make another great run in the state tournament.

Marie currently resides in Liberty Hill with her 10-year-old son, Easton. This is Marie’s 7th season with the Roots Volleyball family.
