This season (2021-2022) Morgan O’Brien is the assistant coach for Roots Volleyball’s top 12s team – 12 Under Armour Green.
Morgan has three older siblings, McKenzie, Mason and Madison, and a German Shepherd named Mercy and grew up in Illinois. She earned numerous awards at Libertyvolle High School including PrepVolleyball.com All-American Special Mention, IHSA All-State First-Team (junior season), named a Max Preps All-American (sophomore season), two-time North Suburban All-Conference, North Suburban All-Conference Honorable Mention (freshman season), two-time Daily Herald/Lake County All-Area, Daily Herald/Lake County All-Area Honorable Mention (freshman season), two-time Pioneer Press All-Area Girls Volleyball Team. She led her team to the Illinois State Runner-Up in Class 4A as a sophomore and was named the Libertyville High School MVP (junior season). Set the school record for digs as a senior and earned the Community High School District 128 Distinguished Student Award and High School Hardest Working Award (sophomore season).
She continued her career collegiately at the University of Illinois. In her 2017 season, she saw action in 31 matches, starting 14 and playing in 115 sets, was ranked third on the team with 229 digs for a 1.99 digs per set average, and led the Illini with 22 service aces and registered one kill for 23 points, while also ranking third on the team with 42 assists She stepped in as the Illini libero for seven matches (Oct. 7-28) during senior Brandi Donnelly’s injury, totaling 101 digs for a 3.74 digs per set average and registered a career-high with 24 digs at No. 5 Minnesota (10/25).
In her 2018 season, she earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, CSU Invitational All-Tournament Team, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (10/29), Academic All-Big Ten, and iFund Scholar-Athlete of the Week (12/5) honors. She was the mainstay at the libero position, O’Brien started all 36 matches for the Illini. She registered a team-high 571 digs for a 4.33 digs per set average, while also posting 28 service aces. Along with her passing, the Illini were able to record a .281 hitting percentage as a team and paced all players with 27 digs in the NCAA National Semifinal against Nebraska (12/13).
In her 2019 season, she entered Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (11/18), played in 105 sets, and 27 matches, recorded 402 digs for 3.83 per set, and 112 assists and 29 aces.
O’Brien graduated from Illinois, earning her Bachelor of Science in community health in just three years. She finished her final year of eligibility at the University of Texas, while will be pursuing her masters of health behaviors and health education. In her 2020 season, she played in 12 matches and 40 sets during the fall scheduled, led Texas with 145 digs and 3.63 digs per set, finished second on the team with 13 service aces, had 24 assists, and had a season-high 19 digs at Oklahoma (9/25).
This will be her first season coaching with the Roots Volleyball family.
