Coach Bio
This season (2024-2025) Matt Morgan is the head coach for Roots Volleyball’s second 18s team – 18-2 Blue.
Matt was born in Austin, TX and attended Round Rock High School. He graduated in 2010 and continued his education at Texas State. While at Texas State, he played three seasons for the men’s club team. He graduated in 2018 with a BS in Geography.
Last season (2023-2024) Matt was the head coach for 18-2 Blue. They narrowly missed qualifying at Lone Star 18s Classic National Qualifier (5th place) and made it to the gold bracket at Salt Lake City National Qualifier (9th place). They secured their JO bid at Lone Star Regionals (Freedom division). 18-2 Blue had a strong showing under Matt’s guidance at USAV Girls’ 18s Junior Nationals in Baltimore, MD.
The previous season (2022-2023) he served as the head coach for 18 Blue, he served as the assistant coach for 17 Under Armour Blue (2021-2022), and he served as the assistant coach for 15 Pecan (2020-2021). Before joining the Roots Volleyball staff, Matt coached one season of club volleyball in San Antonio. His teams performed well earning several medals. He brings a wealth of knowledge and fun energy with him to the court.
Matt will be returning for his 2nd season as our dedicated Recruiting Director. Matt is the lead Recruiting Director onsite and works in conjunction with our LOVB national Recruiting Coordinator (Glenna Bianchin).
Matt currently resides in Austin and works as a Programmer for lead4ward. He recently got engaged to his fiancé, Mica Rucker, and will get married in October 2025. This is his 5th season coaching with the Roots Volleyball family.
