Coach Bio

This season (2024-2025) Jim Howard is the head coach for Roots Volleyball’s top 10s team – 10-1 Green.

Last season (2023-2024) Jim was the assistant coach for Roots Volleyball’s top 11s team – 11-1 Green. Under Jim’s guidance 11 Green finished in the top 10 of seven of their tournaments and earned 6 medals (four 1st place). They finished the season the highest ranked team in the Lone Star Region and the highest win percentage at 82.5% (33-7) at Roots Volleyball. They also had a 10-3 (77%) 3rd set record and started the season on a 15-match win streak. The previous season Jim was a volunteer floater coach and worked with several Roots Volleyball teams. Jim has been a Roots parent since 2017 when his daughter joined the club to play 11s. He also previously coached youth soccer.

Jim was born in Concord, California but was introduced to volleyball after moving to the east coast as a child. Jim was a three-year volleyball starter for Quince Orchard High School including an undefeated championship season his junior year. Jim played middle hitter at Maryland Volleyball Program and went to the 1993 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships in Kansas City.

Jim returned to California for college, graduating from UCLA with a degree in Political Science. He met his wife, Heather, in Los Angeles while developing Internet projects for movie studios. Together they have two children and moved to Texas in 2007. Jim works for TicketCity in Austin as Vice President of Operations. This is Jim’s 3rd season coaching with the Roots Volleyball family.
